Water Heater Replacement
Tankless water heater installation
Installing a tankless water heater is more than swapping one appliance for another. A gas tankless unit burns much more gas per hour than a tank while it runs, so it often needs a larger gas line and its own vent, and an electric model needs heavy dedicated circuits. The unit is sized by the flow you use at once and how cold your incoming water is.

A tank heater warms water slowly and stores it. A tankless heater has to raise cold water to shower temperature in the few seconds it spends in the heat exchanger, which takes a large burner or large heating elements. That is why a home whose gas meter, piping and vent were sized for a tank cannot always accept a tankless unit without changes.
Sizing works on flow rate and temperature rise. A unit that runs two showers at once where groundwater is warm may manage only one where winter inlet water is near freezing. An installer should ask how many fixtures you run together and size from the manufacturer's chart for your climate.
When you need tankless water heater installation
- Your tank heater is due for replacement and you want continuous hot water
- You need the floor space a tank takes up
- You are remodeling and walls or gas piping are already open
- Your household regularly runs out of hot water with a correctly sized tank
How it is done and the choices involved
- 1
Gas supply
The installer calculates whether the meter and pipe can deliver the unit's input along with your other gas appliances. Upsizing the line, or asking the utility for a larger meter, is common.
- 2
Venting and condensate
Condensing units vent through plastic pipe and produce acidic condensate that must be drained, sometimes through a neutralizer. Non-condensing units need stainless vent pipe. Outdoor models in mild climates avoid venting altogether.
- 3
Electrical
Gas units need a standard outlet for controls and ignition. Whole-house electric units need several high-amperage circuits, which can exceed what an older electrical panel can supply.
- 4
Water quality and service valves
Isolation valves are installed so the heat exchanger can be flushed. In hard-water areas, a softener or scale filter protects the unit and may be needed to keep the warranty valid.
What affects the cost of tankless water heater installation
Prices vary by market and job. The pro gives you a price before starting; these factors drive it.
- Gas line upsizing and any meter upgrade
- New venting route and termination
- Electrical work, especially for electric models
- Relocating the heater, for example to an exterior wall
- Unit capacity and whether it has built-in recirculation
- Permit and inspection
- Water treatment in hard-water areas
Tankless Water Heater Installation FAQ
Can a tankless water heater use my existing gas line?
Sometimes, but often not. Tankless units have a much higher gas input than a tank. The installer has to calculate the load on the pipe from the meter, and a larger line is a common part of the job.
Do tankless water heaters work in cold climates?
Yes, with correct sizing. Colder incoming water needs a bigger temperature rise, which lowers the flow a given unit can deliver. In cold regions that usually means a higher-capacity unit, or two, and freeze protection for any outdoor piping.
Will I get instant hot water with a tankless heater?
No. The heater makes hot water continuously, but the water still has to travel through the pipes to the tap. A recirculation system shortens the wait; a tankless unit alone does not.
Does a tankless water heater need maintenance?
Yes. The heat exchanger should be flushed to remove scale and the inlet filter cleaned on the manufacturer's schedule, more often with hard water. Skipping it leads to error codes, reduced flow and early failure.
