Slab Leak Repair in Houston, TX

Slab leaks are common in Houston because nearly every home sits on a concrete slab over clay that swells when wet and shrinks in drought. The movement stresses water lines under the slab. Repair options are a spot repair through the floor, tunneling under the house, or rerouting the line through the attic and walls.

What is different about slab leak repair in Houston?

Houston's soil makes the repair method a bigger decision than in most cities. Breaking through the slab reaches the pipe fastest but disturbs flooring. Tunneling from outside leaves the interior alone but removes soil from under the foundation, and that soil has to be put back properly. Rerouting abandons the buried line altogether.

Rerouting has a local catch: lines in a Houston attic are exposed in a hard freeze, as the February 2021 storm showed. If a plumber proposes an attic reroute, ask how the new line will be insulated and whether it can run through interior walls instead. If the house has had foundation work, or needs it, tell the plumber, because foundation movement and under-slab leaks are often connected.

Slab leaks and foundation movement

Houston's clay soils swell when wet and shrink in drought. That movement stresses water lines under the slab and can shear drain lines where they pass through it.

What to check and ask before work starts in Houston

  • Ask how the leak was located and whether it is on the supply side or the drain side
  • Ask for the trade-offs of slab access, tunneling and rerouting for your house
  • Ask how any rerouted attic line will be protected from freezing
  • Verify the plumber's license with the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners

Licensing and permits for slab leak repair in Houston

Plumbers in Texas are licensed by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, and you can verify a license on the board's website. Inside the city limits, plumbing permits are issued through the Houston Permitting Center; unincorporated areas and separate cities such as Pasadena or Sugar Land have their own requirements.

Keystream Plumbing is a referral service. We do not perform plumbing work or hold a contractor license. The independent plumber you are connected with is responsible for licensing, permits and the work itself.

Slab Leak Repair questions from Houston

Does homeowners insurance cover slab leaks in Houston?

Policies differ. Many cover the resulting water damage and sometimes the cost of reaching the pipe, but not repairing the pipe itself, and some limit foundation-related claims. Read your policy and ask your agent; a plumber cannot tell you what your insurer will pay.

Can a slab leak damage my foundation?

A long-running leak adds water to clay soil under one part of the slab, and that soil swells while the rest stays dry. Uneven movement can crack the slab and walls. Fixing the leak early limits the risk.
